A Historic fiction novel, Just One Shard, may be the 2002 Newbery Medal Award champion. Sometimes you can aquire a hint of the story through the title. Initially the title put me off because it didn't seem like the kind of book a ten or twelve-years old would read. Linda Sue Park gives visitors insight for an unfamiliar duration of twelfth-century Korea which stories the existence of the orphan, a destitute guy along with a gifted potter.
Tree-ear was named for any "mushroom that develops without advantage of parents" by Crane Guy who had been so known as due to his one shriveled leg. Nobody knows where Tree-ear originated from. Rumor been with them that his parents were wiped out within an accident. To be able to survive Tree-ear rummages through garbage dumps and scavenges for food every single day and when he's lucky they can get some remaining grain that nobody wants. Crain guy, who's a hay weaver, attempts to do his part but due to his disability he could only manage some scavenging close to the rivers edge their current address. Crane-guy may be the only family Tree-ear has seen.
Tree-ear designed a practice of preventing at potter Min's outside studio to look at him create delicate celadon pottery. Eventually Tree-ear accidentally breaks a pot. To be able to purchase damages, Tree-ear adopts servitude for nine days and eventually ends up working full-time for that potter. Naturally Tree-ear hopes Min will train him the pottery trade but Min doesn't have aim of training a boy who isn't associated with him. Min and Tree-ear start a precarious relationship. This can be a well-developed account of triumph of the boy who should not have overcome the chances but did.
This story is really worth reading through. The passages explaining how this beautiful celadon pottery is made over 700 years back will intrigue any readers. Park's dialogue and prose really are a prime illustration of the adage for authors. "Show don't tell."
